A few thoughts on Enlightened Persistence…

Ever heard of a heavy metal band called Anvil?

Last night I watched a documentary about them made in 2008, about how they almost cracked the heavy metal rock-star gateway to millions in 1984, but they didn’t quite make it, just some strange situation about not quite being in the right place at the right time.

Despite their failure, where others who followed and rode on their coat tails to an extent went on to massive success, the Anvil guys kept rocking on for another 21 years in their spare time and holidays… working jobs, raising families and never giving up on their dream of international rock star legend status.

After the documentary, they got remembered by many, got greater exposure and finally they managed to leverage off that to take things up to a whole new level and in 2010 they did a sold-out tour of Europe… venues, festivals, acclaim and profits!!

Lips and Rob, the two core founding members of Anvil who didn’t give up on their dream at last realised their dreams after 25 years of persistence!

Aged well in their 50’s!

Funnily enough, that’s the age decade from which Ray Kroc made the transition from milk shake machine salesman to founder of McDonald’s, which he continued to build and run well into his 80’s

I’m turning 41 in a few weeks, so I’m saying this to give myself hope for the future 😎

I am keeping my dreams alive and giving myself at least another ten years minimum of dedication and persistence to bring them to fruition.

Persistence alone however is inadequate. In fact, persistence without learning and adaptation can lead to insanity.

Einstein’s definition of insanity was to keep doing the same things you have always done, somehow expecting a different result.

The other adverse outcome that blind persistence can lead to is fanaticism. To re-phrase something Brian Tracy said, fanaticism is what you get when to when you continue with an endeavour with increasing intensity of effort, while having forgotten why you were ever doing it in the first place.

So, persistence alone could lead to fanaticism, insanity or both.

You must be guided by inner wisdom and outer awareness of circumstances and results.

Building a successful heavy metal band rock star career, succeeding in business, or any other endeavour, like your career, or a skill, language, mastery of a sport, whatever, is like learning to juggle…

First, 1 ball, hand to hand, 1,000 times

Ssecond, 2 balls, up, up, catch, catch, 2,000 times

Third, 3 balls, up, up, catch, up, catch, up, catch up, 10,000 times

It’s an accelerated metaphor for the 10,000 hours to mastery concept.

Myself, I still cannot juggle 4 balls, either literally or figeratively in business, career and personal transformation.

I need a mentors and teachers to go past where I’m at the 3 balls level in different aspects of my life.

teacher –> mentor –> mastermind –> networked learning and teaching == accelerated evolution

When you are appropriate informed and guided, let’s call this enlightened persistence.

With enlightened persistence as the foundation, guided by others who are more knowledgeable, skilled and wiser, you will be on the right path, Grasshopper.

Just make sure you never lose sight of why you started juggling in the first place.

Like Lips and Rob from Anvil, maintain your passion, live for the music that’s inside you; its the act of co-creation and the experience of the music that mattered to them and it will be the enjoyment of what you do that matters for you.

For Lips, Rob and the other Anvil members, sharing it all with their fans really mattered and making a few extra bucks out of it along the way to support their families, apart from their day jobs, was always a bonus.

Incredible, Legendary Mind-Power Secrets! GeniusBrainPower.net PERSISTENCE is an essential factor in the procedure of transmuting DESIRE into its monetary equivalent. The basis of persistence is the POWER OF WILL. Will-power and desire, when properly combined, make an irresistible pair. Men who accumulate great fortunes are generally known as cold-blooded, and sometimes ruthless. Often they are misunderstood. What they have is will-power, which they mix with persistence, and place back of their desires to insure the attainment of their objectives. Henry Ford has been generally misunderstood to be ruthless and cold-blooded. This misconception grew out of Ford’s habit of following through in all of his plans with PERSISTENCE. The majority of people are ready to throw their aims and purposes overboard, and give up at the first sign of opposition or misfortune. A few carry on DESPITE all opposition, until they attain their goal. These few are the Fords, Carnegies, Rockefellers, and Edisons. There may be no heroic connotation to the word “persistence,” but the quality is to the character of man what carbon is to steel.
