Google to kill Domain Tasting

“A confidential informant says Google will stop monetizing all domains if they are less then five days old. This potential new policy change by Google could stop all Domain Tasting in its tracks. The Add Grace Period (AGP) is a time period when registrars can delete a domain at no cost, but in this time frame a registrant could…” - from Blog.DomainTools.com

The practice of many domain squatters of ‘kiting’ or ‘tasting’, whereby thousands upon thousands of domains are registered for a few days used to serve ads during the free grace period, then cancelled and then re-registered for another grace-period, over and over again, is a really sneaky, selfish way to hog vast numbers of otherwise potentially useful domain names.

It is fantastic to learn that Google is taking a stance on this, by not paying out AdSense commissions on domains less than five days old.

Further, blog.DomainTools.com has a posting indicating that ICANN is looking at modifying its rules to prevent this disreputable practice. An important point however is that a grace period of some sort is still required for legitimate registrar refund requirements, such as when someone purchases with a bad credit card. One suggestion is that registrars could have a percentage allowance of registrations that can be reversed within the grace period.
